Building Society ISA Transfer Guide: Move Your Cash ISA Safely

To move a Cash ISA safely, ask the new ISA provider to arrange an official ISA transfer. Do not normally withdraw the balance into your current account and pay it into another ISA yourself, because that can cause existing ISA money to lose its tax-free status.

Cash ISA transfers should normally take no more than 15 working days. A transfer itself does not use fresh annual ISA allowance, but withdrawal charges, fixed-rate penalties, flexible-ISA rules and individual building society transfer policies can still affect the move.

Most important rule: an ISA transfer and an ordinary withdrawal are not the same thing. If you want existing ISA money to retain its ISA status, start with the receiving ISA provider and use its transfer process.

Independent editorial review: 23 September 2026. This guide reflects the current 2026/27 ISA framework and the announced rules taking effect from 6 April 2027. Individual building societies can apply stricter transfer-in rules than the wider HMRC framework.

Cash ISA Transfer: Quick Answers

15 working days Standard maximum transfer timescale for Cash ISA to Cash ISA transfers.
30 calendar days Standard transfer timescale for many transfers involving another ISA type.
£20,000 Overall adult ISA subscription allowance for the 2026/27 tax year.
0 extra allowance An eligible ISA transfer itself is not treated as a fresh subscription simply because the money moves provider.
6 April 2027 Date major Cash ISA subscription and transfer-rule changes begin.
£12,000 Cash ISA subscription limit from 6 April 2027 for people under age 65.
Fast answer: choose the Cash ISA you want to move to, check that it accepts ISA transfers, open it if required, complete the new provider’s ISA transfer request and let the two providers move the money between them.

How to Transfer a Cash ISA Safely

You normally do not need to ask the old building society to send you the money first. The receiving ISA provider coordinates the transfer with the provider you are leaving.

Step 1 Choose the new ISA

Check the live AER, access rules, whether the rate is fixed or variable and whether the account accepts transfers in.

Step 2 Check your old ISA terms

Look for an early-access charge, notice period, fixed maturity date or restriction that could make moving now expensive.

Step 3 Open the receiving ISA if required

Some societies require the new Cash ISA to be open before you can submit the transfer request.

Step 4 Complete the ISA transfer request

Give the receiving provider the old provider name, ISA account number and other requested transfer details.

Step 5 Let the providers move the money

Do not separately close or empty the old ISA unless the transfer process specifically tells you to.

Step 6 Check completion

Confirm the transferred amount, interest treatment, new rate and whether the old ISA remains open after a partial transfer.

Why You Should Not Usually Withdraw a Cash ISA Yourself

Official ISA transfer

The receiving provider requests the ISA money directly from your existing provider.

  • Existing ISA tax benefits are preserved.
  • The transferred balance is not simply treated as a new deposit.
  • Previous-year ISA money can remain sheltered.
  • The providers exchange the required ISA transfer information.

Ordinary withdrawal and redeposit

You take money from the ISA into a normal account and then try to pay it into another ISA.

  • The money can lose its existing ISA status.
  • A new payment may consume current-year allowance.
  • You may not have enough unused allowance to put it all back.
  • Flexible ISA rules do not automatically make every manual move safe.
Example: if you have £40,000 built up in Cash ISAs from earlier tax years, withdrawing £40,000 into a current account does not mean you can simply pay £40,000 into a new Cash ISA as a fresh 2026/27 subscription. Use an ISA transfer.

Can You Transfer Only Part of a Cash ISA?

Under the current HMRC framework, ISA transfers can include some or all of current-year or previous-year subscriptions, subject to the terms agreed by the providers. Partial transfers of current-year ISA subscriptions have been permitted under the national ISA framework since April 2024.

That does not mean every building society has to support every partial transfer. A receiving provider can set narrower operational or product rules.

Money being moved
HMRC framework
Provider can differ?
What to do
Previous tax-year Cash ISA money
Can generally be transferred in full or in part.
Yes. The new account still has to accept the transfer.
Tell the receiving provider how much previous-year money you want transferred.
Current tax-year subscriptions
Partial current-year transfers are permitted under the current HMRC framework.
Yes. Some societies require the whole current-year Cash ISA subscription to be moved.
Check the receiving provider’s transfer policy before assuming a partial transfer is available.
Whole ISA
Full transfer is permitted.
Product closure or fixed-rate charges can still apply.
Check whether the old account closes automatically after the full transfer.
Why older articles can be misleading: before April 2024, the rules around current-year ISA transfers were more restrictive. The national framework now allows partial current-year transfers, but provider-specific rules still need checking.

HMRC Rules vs Building Society Transfer Rules

ISA legislation sets the outer framework. The provider still decides which transfers its particular product supports, subject to those rules.

HMRC currently permits

  • Multiple adult ISAs of the same type in the same tax year.
  • Transfers between ISA providers.
  • Transfers between eligible ISA types, subject to specific ISA restrictions.
  • Partial current-year ISA transfers.
  • Full or partial previous-year transfers.

A provider may still say

  • This particular ISA does not accept transfers in.
  • Transfer-in requests must arrive by a product funding deadline.
  • Current-year Cash ISA money must be transferred in full.
  • An internal transfer must be full rather than partial.
  • A fixed ISA transfer carries an interest penalty.
Practical rule: ask two questions separately: “Is this transfer allowed by ISA rules?” and “Does this specific building society product accept the transfer I want to make?”

How Long Does a Cash ISA Transfer Take?

GOV.UK states that a transfer between Cash ISAs should take no longer than 15 working days. Other ISA transfer types normally have a 30-calendar-day timescale.

Cash ISA → Cash ISA Up to 15 working days under the standard transfer timetable.
Other ISA type transfers Typically up to 30 calendar days under the general ISA transfer timetable.
Electronic Cash ISA transfer Can be quicker. Skipton and Coventry currently describe some electronic transfers completing in around seven business days.
Paper or cheque transfer Can take closer to the full 15-working-day Cash ISA timescale.
During a transfer there can be a period when the old ISA no longer appears in online banking and the new ISA has not yet appeared. Nationwide specifically notes that this can be a normal part of the transfer process.

Can You Transfer a Fixed Rate Cash ISA Before Maturity?

Usually you can request an ISA transfer before maturity, but a fixed-rate Cash ISA can impose an early-access or early-transfer charge. That can make an apparently better new interest rate poor value.

Find the exact maturity date.
Check the early-transfer penalty.
Check whether partial withdrawals are permitted.
Check the new provider’s funding deadline.
Ask whether the transfer can be scheduled for maturity.
Compare the penalty with the expected interest gain.
Current Leeds example: its September 2026 one-year fixed Cash ISA issue permits withdrawals or transfers but currently applies an amount equivalent to 90 days’ loss of interest. Other fixed ISAs can use different penalties.

Flexible Cash ISA Transfers Need Extra Care

If you have made withdrawals from a flexible ISA and have not yet replaced them, do not assume the unused flexible replacement allowance will simply follow the money to a new provider.

HMRC’s flexible-ISA transfer rules are more technical than an ordinary full Cash ISA transfer. The treatment can depend on current-year net subscriptions, previous-year withdrawals and whether the old account remains open.

Coventry’s current customer guidance is particularly clear: a flexible allowance created in the old ISA is not itself transferable to another provider. If you have an unreplaced flexible withdrawal, check what happens to it before the old ISA is transferred or closed.

How Major Building Societies Handle ISA Transfers

Building society
How to start
Timing / transfer rule
Important difference
Nationwide
Request the transfer when opening a new Nationwide Cash ISA.
Cash ISA transfer can take up to 15 working days after Nationwide receives the request.
Nationwide currently says an external ISA transfer must go into a new Nationwide ISA rather than an existing Nationwide ISA.
Leeds Building Society
Open a Leeds Cash ISA, then complete the ISA transfer request online, by form, branch or supported contact route.
Leeds says Cash ISA transfers can take up to 15 working days.
Leeds currently requires all current-year Cash ISA subscriptions to move in certain transfer-in situations, while previous-year Cash ISA savings can be transferred in full or in part.
Skipton Building Society
Open a qualifying Cash ISA or use the ISA Transfer In option on an eligible existing Skipton ISA.
Electronic Cash ISA transfers can complete within around seven business days; paper or cheque transfers may take up to 15.
Internal Skipton Cash ISA-to-ISA transfers can have different full-balance rules from an external transfer.
Coventry Building Society
Use Online Services, call Coventry or visit a branch for a supported transfer.
Electronic transfers can be quicker; Cash ISA transfers remain subject to the normal 15-business-day maximum framework.
Coventry currently requires full transfer of current-year Cash ISA savings under its transfer policy, while previous-year money can be moved in full or part.
Yorkshire Building Society
Open or use an eligible YBS ISA and submit the transfer request online or by the supported form/branch route.
YBS states Cash ISA providers have 15 working days to complete a Cash ISA transfer.
For a transfer out of YBS, contact the new ISA provider rather than closing the YBS ISA yourself.

Transfer an ISA to Nationwide

Nationwide currently allows an ISA from another provider to be transferred when you open a new Nationwide ISA. Depending on the provider you are transferring from, the transfer can be requested online or in branch.

Transfer an ISA to Leeds Building Society

Leeds accepts eligible transfers from Cash ISAs and Stocks and Shares ISAs into its supported Cash ISA products. Leeds says you should first open the receiving Leeds ISA and then complete its ISA transfer request.

Transfer an ISA to Skipton Building Society

Skipton allows eligible transfers into its Cash ISA range where the receiving product accepts transfers. Its electronic process can be faster than the full industry deadline when both providers use the electronic ISA transfer system.

Transfer an ISA to Coventry Building Society

Coventry supports eligible full and partial ISA transfers through Online Services, telephone and branches. The exact amount that can be transferred depends on the tax year of the money and Coventry’s own transfer policy.

Transfer an ISA to Yorkshire Building Society

YBS lets eligible customers arrange ISA transfers online, by transfer form or through a branch depending on how the account is managed. If you are transferring away from YBS, the new provider should start the transfer.

Transferring a Fixed Cash ISA at Maturity

Maturity can be the cleanest time to transfer a fixed Cash ISA because the fixed-term early-access charge normally stops once the agreed term has ended.

However, the timing still matters. A new limited-issue ISA may have a transfer-in deadline, while your existing provider may need the transfer request to specify that funds should not leave until maturity.

Read your maturity notice.
Check the old ISA maturity date.
Check the new ISA funding deadline.
Ask whether a future-dated transfer is supported.
Avoid triggering an early-access charge unnecessarily.
Use an ISA transfer to retain ISA status.

Why an ISA Transfer Can Be Delayed or Rejected

Account number mismatch A wrong ISA account, roll or reference number can prevent the old provider matching the request.
Name or personal details differ Different names, addresses or incomplete customer details can trigger further checks.
Receiving ISA does not accept transfers Not every Cash ISA accepts existing ISA money.
Fixed-term restriction The transfer may be delayed to maturity or processed with an early-access charge depending on your instructions.
Transfer amount conflicts with provider rules A requested partial transfer may not match the receiving society’s current-year transfer policy.
Funding deadline missed A limited-issue Cash ISA can stop accepting transfers before the provider completes your request.
Coventry specifically lists incorrect transfer details, customer-information mismatches, lack of funds and errors at the existing provider as examples of reasons a transfer can fail.

What If the Transfer Takes More Than 15 Working Days?

GOV.UK says Cash ISA transfers should take no longer than 15 working days. If a straightforward Cash ISA transfer goes beyond that period, contact the provider handling the transfer and ask for the status.

Keep the date you submitted the request, any transfer reference, screenshots or confirmation emails and the details of any calls. If the issue remains unresolved after the provider’s complaint process, GOV.UK points customers to the Financial Ombudsman Service.

Do not submit a second transfer request simply because the first ISA temporarily disappears from online banking. Duplicate instructions can make an already delayed transfer harder to trace.

ISA Transfer Rules Change From 6 April 2027

The 2026/27 rules remain in force until 5 April 2027. From 6 April 2027, the government is introducing a lower Cash ISA subscription limit for people under 65 plus new restrictions on transfers from non-Cash ISAs into Cash ISAs.

Under age 65 Annual Cash ISA subscriptions will be limited to £12,000 within the overall £20,000 ISA limit.
Age 65 or over The Cash ISA subscription limit remains £20,000, subject to the overall ISA allowance.
Non-Cash → Cash ISA Transfers from Stocks and Shares and Innovative Finance ISAs into Cash ISAs will be restricted from 6 April 2027 for people below the age threshold.
Cash → non-Cash ISA The government says transfers from Cash ISAs to non-Cash ISAs will remain possible under the new framework.
Do not apply the £12,000 limit early. For the current 2026/27 tax year, the overall adult ISA subscription allowance remains £20,000.

Common Cash ISA Transfer Mistakes

Withdrawing the ISA yourself This can remove the existing tax-free ISA status of the withdrawn money.
Ignoring a fixed-rate penalty A better rate elsewhere may not recover an early-transfer interest charge.
Assuming every ISA accepts transfers A good headline rate is irrelevant if the product is new-money only.
Following an old current-year rule HMRC now permits partial current-year transfers, but individual provider policies may remain stricter.
Forgetting flexible allowance Unused flexible replacement rights can be affected when the old ISA is transferred or closed.
Missing a product deadline Some limited-issue fixed ISAs stop taking transfer requests on a specific date.

Building Society ISA Transfer FAQs

1. How do I transfer a Cash ISA to another building society?

Choose a new Cash ISA that accepts transfers, open it if required and ask the new provider to arrange an ISA transfer. Give the receiving provider your existing ISA details and let the providers move the money between them.

2. Should I withdraw my Cash ISA and pay it into the new ISA myself?

Normally no. A manual withdrawal can cause the money to lose its existing ISA tax-free status. Use the receiving provider’s formal ISA transfer process when you want to preserve the ISA wrapper.

3. Does transferring an ISA use my £20,000 annual ISA allowance?

An eligible ISA transfer is not itself treated as a fresh subscription simply because existing ISA money moves between providers. New money you separately subscribe still counts toward the applicable annual ISA allowance.

4. Can I transfer only part of my Cash ISA?

The current HMRC framework allows full and partial ISA transfers, including partial current-year transfers. However, individual providers can impose stricter product rules, so the receiving building society may require a full transfer in some circumstances.

5. How long should a Cash ISA transfer take?

A Cash ISA to Cash ISA transfer should normally take no longer than 15 working days. Some electronic transfers complete sooner. Transfers involving other ISA types normally have a 30-calendar-day standard timescale.

6. Can I transfer a fixed-rate Cash ISA before it matures?

Usually you can request a transfer, but the existing fixed ISA may impose an early-access or interest penalty. Check the charge and ask whether a maturity-date transfer is available before moving early.

7. What happens to flexible ISA allowance when I transfer?

Flexible ISA transfers have additional rules. Do not assume an unused flexible replacement allowance automatically follows the transfer. If you have withdrawn money that you intend to replace, check with both providers before the old flexible ISA is transferred or closed.

8. Can I transfer previous-year Cash ISA money without affecting this year’s allowance?

Yes, an eligible transfer of previous-year ISA savings does not simply become a fresh current-year subscription. Previous-year Cash ISA money can generally be transferred in full or in part, subject to the receiving account’s terms.

9. What changes to Cash ISA transfers from April 2027?

From 6 April 2027, people under 65 will have a £12,000 Cash ISA subscription limit within the £20,000 overall ISA allowance. New restrictions will also prevent transfers from non-Cash ISAs into Cash ISAs for people below the relevant age threshold, while transfers from Cash ISAs to non-Cash ISAs remain possible.

10. What should I do if my Cash ISA transfer takes longer than 15 working days?

Contact the provider handling the transfer and ask for a status update using your transfer reference. Keep the original request date and any correspondence. If the provider does not resolve the issue through its complaint process, GOV.UK says you can take an eligible complaint to the Financial Ombudsman Service.
