Manchester Building Society: Existing Accounts & Newcastle Guide

Independent Manchester Building Society Customer Guide

Manchester Building Society: Existing Accounts & Newcastle Guide

If you already have a Manchester Building Society account, the most important question is not simply “where is Manchester Building Society now?” It is which Manchester account you hold. Manchester merged with Newcastle Building Society on 1 July 2023, but older Manchester savings and mortgage accounts still have dedicated legacy instructions, while newer Manchester savings customers use the relaunched Manchester service.

This guide separates those routes clearly. It covers old pre-July-2023 savings accounts, current Manchester online savings, existing Manchester mortgages, Newcastle Building Society’s role, the King Street branch, shared FSCS protection, contact numbers and where to send account instructions.

Independent website and security notice: Building-society.org is not Manchester Building Society or Newcastle Building Society. Do not enter your user ID, password, memorable answers, account number, mortgage number, bank details or security codes on this page.

Meaningful editorial review: 18 September 2026. Interest rates, product availability, telephone hours, branch services and account procedures can change. Always check the current Manchester or Newcastle official page before moving money or changing an account.

First: Which Manchester Building Society Account Do You Have?

Manchester’s own help centre separates customers who joined before July 2023 from customers using the newer Manchester savings service. That distinction matters because the contact number, account-management process and even the account-number format referenced in Manchester’s guidance can differ.

Legacy savings You held Manchester savings before July 2023

Start with the dedicated pre-July-2023 savings pages. Manchester currently publishes 0161 923 8065 for this group.

A useful clue: Manchester’s pre-July-2023 savings guidance refers to a 10-digit Manchester account number. Separate current Manchester ISA guidance refers to a 7-digit account number for that newer service. Do not copy payment or transfer instructions from a different account generation.

What Happened to Manchester Building Society?

Manchester Building Society successfully merged with Newcastle Building Society on 1 July 2023 by transferring its engagements to Newcastle. Manchester no longer operates as a separate building society; the Manchester Building Society name is now a trading name of Newcastle Building Society.

That does not mean the Manchester name disappeared. Newcastle subsequently invested in relaunching the Manchester brand, and Manchester Building Society opened its new King Street flagship branch in Manchester city centre in November 2025.

Trading name Manchester Building Society now operates under Newcastle Building Society.
FRN 156058 Newcastle Building Society’s current Financial Services Register number.
November 2025 Manchester’s new King Street branch opened to customers.
Do not use an old address automatically. Historic Manchester paperwork may show the former Portland Street office. Manchester’s current customer contact pages now direct savings and general correspondence to PO Box 995, Wallsend, NE28 5FR.

Pre-July-2023 Manchester Savings Accounts

If you held a Manchester savings account before the July 2023 merger, use the specific legacy savings guidance. Manchester keeps separate FAQs, interest-rate information and terms for this customer group.

Legacy savings telephone 0161 923 8065, Monday to Friday, 8:30am–5:00pm, excluding bank holidays.
Account reference Legacy instructions refer to your 10-digit Manchester Building Society account number.
Statements Manchester says annual statements are provided, and an interim statement can be requested through the legacy savings team.
Address changes Legacy customers are directed to notify Manchester in writing and provide supporting documents where appropriate.
Account transfers Transfers into another Manchester savings product depend on the conditions of both the old and replacement account.
Lost account documents Manchester asks legacy customers to contact the pre-July-2023 savings team for assistance.
ISA customers: do not withdraw an ISA simply because you want to move it elsewhere. If you want to preserve ISA status, ask the receiving ISA provider to arrange the formal transfer and check whether your Manchester account has notice or penalty conditions.

Current Manchester Building Society Savings Accounts

The relaunched Manchester brand now offers savings products including easy-access accounts, regular savers, fixed-rate savings and Cash ISAs. Some accounts can be opened online, while others are offered through the King Street branch.

Existing online savings customers can manage supported accounts through Manchester’s secure online service and can send secure messages after logging in.

Easy-access savings Designed for customers who need access to money without committing to a fixed term. Always check live withdrawal conditions.
Regular savers Designed for regular monthly saving. Maximum deposits and maturity rules depend on the individual issue.
Fixed-rate bonds Usually restrict withdrawals until maturity, so check access rules before depositing emergency money.
Cash ISAs Manchester offers tax-free savings options subject to current ISA rules, product conditions and transfer requirements.
New-customer condition worth noticing: current Manchester savings product pages state that new customers agree to a Charitable Assignment Scheme for potential future windfall benefits during the first five years of membership. Read the current terms before opening an account rather than treating this as ordinary promotional wording.

Manchester Building Society Login for Online Savings

Manchester’s current online savings login asks for a user ID, password and selected characters from the memorable information set when the account was opened. This login is designed for eligible online Manchester savings accounts.

Have ready

  • Your Manchester online user ID.
  • Your password.
  • Your memorable information.
  • Access to the email address linked to your account if you need password recovery.
  • Your nominated bank details if Manchester requests them during an official recovery step.

Do not share

  • Your full password by email or telephone.
  • All of your memorable answers with an unexpected caller.
  • Security information because someone says your account must be moved urgently.
  • Login details on Building-society.org or another third-party information site.
Forgotten password? Manchester says you can use the password-reset option on the official login page. Forgotten user IDs also have a recovery route. If memorable information is forgotten or the account is locked, call 0345 604 0050.

Existing Manchester Building Society Mortgage Customers

Existing Manchester mortgage customers still have a dedicated Manchester service route. Common tasks include making payments, changing payment details, asking for account information, dealing with an existing mortgage problem or making a complaint about a Manchester mortgage.

Existing mortgage number 0161 923 8030.
Published hours Monday to Friday, 8:30am–5:00pm, excluding bank holidays.
Mortgage email Manchester currently publishes mcs@themanchester.co.uk for existing mortgage customer service.
Postal route Manchester Building Society, PO Box 995, Wallsend, NE28 5FR.
Do not copy mortgage bank details from an old article, saved screenshot or another lender’s page. Payment information is security-sensitive. Use the current Manchester existing-customer page or instructions issued directly for your mortgage.
Mortgage risk warning: your home may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments on your mortgage. If you are struggling, contact the lender early rather than waiting until several payments are missed.

Looking for a New Mortgage? Manchester Now Routes Customers to Newcastle

Manchester’s current mortgage page explains that Manchester members now have access to the mortgage range offered by Newcastle Building Society. New first-time-buyer, home-moving and remortgage journeys are therefore different from the legacy Manchester mortgage servicing route.

Existing Manchester mortgage

  • Start with Manchester’s existing-customer page.
  • Use 0161 923 8030 for the existing Manchester loan.
  • Do not assume Newcastle’s standard payment details apply to the old Manchester loan.

New mortgage application

  • Manchester directs customers to Newcastle’s current mortgage range.
  • Newcastle handles first-time buyer, home mover and remortgage options.
  • New lending remains subject to affordability checks and lending criteria.

Manchester and Newcastle Share the Same £120,000 FSCS Limit

Because Manchester Building Society is a trading name of Newcastle Building Society, eligible deposits held under the two brands are not given separate standard FSCS limits.

Manchester currently states that eligible deposits across Manchester Building Society and Newcastle Building Society are combined for the standard £120,000 FSCS protection limit per eligible person.

£120,000 Current standard FSCS deposit limit per eligible person, per authorised firm.
Manchester Manchester deposits count toward the Newcastle-authorised firm total.
Newcastle Newcastle deposits use the same standard protection limit.
Example: if one eligible person holds £80,000 with Manchester Building Society and £70,000 with Newcastle Building Society, do not assume all £150,000 receives standard FSCS protection simply because two brand names appear on the accounts. Check the current FSCS rules for your exact circumstances.

Common Manchester Building Society Mistakes to Avoid

Assuming every Manchester account moved to the same system Legacy pre-July-2023 accounts and newer Manchester online savings have different support routes.

Using Newcastle payment instructions for an old Manchester account Always follow the instructions published specifically for the Manchester account you hold.
Posting documents to an old Manchester address Check Manchester’s current contact page before mailing. Current customer correspondence uses PO Box 995 in Wallsend.
Counting Manchester and Newcastle FSCS protection separately Eligible deposits under both brands share Newcastle Building Society’s standard £120,000 limit.
Withdrawing an ISA to transfer it Use the receiving provider’s formal ISA-transfer process when preserving ISA status matters.
Starting a new mortgage application for an old mortgage problem Existing Manchester borrowers should use the Manchester existing-customer service first.
Assuming the King Street branch handles everything Check the listed service or arrange an appointment before travelling with documents or a specialist request.
