Building Society Cash ISA Maturity Guide: Transfer or Reinvest?

When a fixed Cash ISA reaches maturity, the fixed interest period ends but the money does not have to lose its ISA tax status. You can usually reinvest with the same building society, move to another ISA, leave the money in a maturity account or withdraw it.

The key decision is whether you still want the money inside an ISA. If you are changing provider and want to preserve the existing tax-free wrapper, use the new provider’s formal ISA transfer process rather than withdrawing the money into your current account first.

Most important warning: a normal bank withdrawal is not the same as an ISA transfer. If you take matured ISA money out of the ISA wrapper and later pay it into another ISA, the old balance can lose its existing tax-free ISA status and the new payment may use fresh allowance. Use the receiving ISA provider’s transfer process when preserving the wrapper matters.

Independent editorial review: 23 September 2026. Maturity accounts, fixed rates, transfer procedures and provider deadlines can change. Your own building society’s maturity letter, Summary Box and current account terms take priority.

Cash ISA Maturity: Quick Answers

Does a Cash ISA stop being tax-free at maturity? No, not simply because the fixed term ends. The money can remain within the ISA wrapper if it stays in or is formally transferred to an ISA.
Can you reinvest? Usually yes. Building societies commonly offer a new fixed Cash ISA or another Cash ISA for maturing customers.
Can you switch provider? Yes. Ask the new ISA provider to arrange the ISA transfer.
Can you withdraw the cash? Usually yes after maturity, but a normal withdrawal takes that money outside the ISA wrapper.
2026/27 ISA allowance £20,000 overall for the current tax year.
Does transferring old ISA money use new allowance? A formal transfer of existing ISA savings is different from making a new ISA subscription and does not simply become a new contribution because you change provider.
Cash ISA transfer target GOV.UK says transfers between Cash ISAs should normally take no longer than 15 working days.
FSCS protection Eligible deposits are currently protected up to £120,000 per eligible person, per authorised firm.
Fast answer: reinvest when the new ISA’s rate, access and term genuinely suit you. Transfer when another provider offers a more useful combination of rate, access or service. Withdraw to a non-ISA only when you actually want the money outside the tax-free ISA wrapper.

What Happens When a Fixed Cash ISA Matures?

A fixed Cash ISA matures when its fixed-interest term reaches the agreed end date. The old fixed rate stops applying and the building society follows either the maturity instructions you supplied or its default maturity process.

Your ISA wrapper does not automatically disappear at that point. Providers can move the money into another ISA in your name, and you can arrange an ISA transfer to another provider without first cashing out the account.

If you keep it inside an ISA

  • The existing ISA savings remain within a tax-free wrapper.
  • You can reinvest with the same provider.
  • You can arrange a formal ISA transfer to another provider.
  • Interest earned inside the ISA remains tax-free, subject to ISA rules.

If you withdraw it outside the ISA

  • The withdrawn amount normally leaves the ISA wrapper.
  • Future interest outside an ISA can be taxable.
  • Paying it into another ISA manually can use fresh allowance.
  • Flexible ISA rules may change the position in specific cases, but must not be assumed.
Maturity removes the fixed-term lock, not the tax wrapper. That distinction is the central point to understand before giving any maturity instruction.

Cash ISA Maturity Timeline: What to Do and When

  1. A few weeks before maturity: watch for a letter, email, app notification or secure message. Nationwide currently starts showing its maturity notification 26 days before maturity and posts a pack around three weeks beforehand; other societies use different notice periods.
  2. Read the default: find the sentence explaining what will happen if you give no instruction. This varies significantly between providers.
  3. Compare the new ISA: check the maturity rate, fixed term, early-access charge, minimum balance and whether you need any money accessible.
  4. Check other providers: if you find a more suitable Cash ISA elsewhere, open or apply for the receiving ISA and ask that provider to arrange the transfer.
  5. Give instructions: use the method listed in your maturity pack: online banking, app, secure message, branch, telephone or post.
  6. After maturity: confirm where the balance moved, the new rate and whether a cooling-off or penalty-free transfer period now applies.
Do not leave provider comparison until the final evening. Some maturity offers are limited issues and some receiving providers need an ISA application before they can request the transfer.

Transfer or Reinvest? Use This Decision Guide

Reinvest The maturity rate is competitive

Staying can make sense when the new rate, term and access rule fit your plans and you value the existing provider’s service.

Transfer Another ISA gives a better fit

Use an official ISA transfer if another building society or bank has a more attractive rate, shorter term, easier access or better service.

Easy access You may need the money soon

Consider an easy-access Cash ISA rather than immediately starting another long fixed term.

Split You want access to only part

Depending on provider rules, part can sometimes be withdrawn or moved while the remainder is reinvested or transferred.

Withdraw You actually need the cash

Take money outside the ISA only after considering whether giving up that accumulated tax-free shelter matters to you.

Wait briefly You are not ready to choose

Where the provider’s default is an instant-access maturity ISA, you may be able to keep the wrapper while taking more time to compare.

Reinvest if: the same building society offers a suitable rate, you understand the new early-access charge and you will not need the money during the new fixed term.
Transfer if: another ISA offers a materially better combination of AER, access, fixed term, digital/branch service or maturity treatment.
Do not rush either choice if: you expect to use part of the money within the next year. Check whether an easy-access ISA is more practical.

How Building Society Cash ISA Maturity Rules Differ

Maturity defaults are not standardised. Two fixed Cash ISAs can both be tax-free savings products but send customers into very different accounts if they do nothing.

Provider
Current maturity approach
Important detail
Nationwide
If you wait until after maturity, the balance moves into its Fixed Term Cash ISA Maturity instant-access account.
You can reinvest, move money to another Nationwide account, withdraw, or transfer to another ISA provider. Moving money outside an ISA loses its ISA status.
Coventry Building Society
If no instructions are received, Coventry automatically reinvests the matured savings into the ISA shown as its default maturity option.
Its current maturity guidance gives a 21-calendar-day period after maturity in which usual withdrawal/closure charges do not apply to the reinvestment ISA.
Skipton Building Society
Current Fixed Rate Cash ISAs automatically move into a new one-year Fixed Rate Cash ISA if no alternative instruction is given.
Current terms state that the new account has similar fixed restrictions, so doing nothing can mean another lock-in.
Principality Building Society
Maturity options appear for eligible customers around 14 days before maturity.
Principality currently offers member-only maturity products and says that if it receives no instruction it moves the balance to the account stated in the maturity notice.
West Brom
Current fixed ISA terms allow automatic reinvestment into a similar/shorter fixed Cash ISA or a variable Cash ISA if an appropriate fixed product is unavailable.
Current terms provide a 21-day cooling-off period after maturity for the stated automatic reinvestment arrangement.
YBS / Chelsea online maturity process
Current online maturity guidance can move a fixed ISA into a Variable or Fixed Rate e-ISA giving access after maturity.
Customers can then reinvest or transfer, but a normal withdrawal out of the ISA wrapper loses that money’s existing ISA status.
The words “automatic reinvestment” matter. A provider can move your balance into another fixed ISA if you do nothing. Check whether there is a penalty-free period to change your mind and note when it ends.

Option 1: Reinvest With the Same Building Society

Reinvestment keeps the money within an ISA while moving it into a new product from the same provider. This is administratively simple, but it should still be treated as a brand-new savings decision.

Compare the new tax-free/AER.
Check the new fixed term.
Read the early-access charge.
Check whether partial withdrawals are allowed.
Check how long you can add new money.
Check whether monthly interest is offered.
Compare the provider’s easy-access ISA.
Compare rival providers before accepting the maturity rate.
Maturity-only rate does not automatically mean market-leading. Some building societies offer exclusive maturity rates, but you should still compare the return, term and access conditions elsewhere.
Current Principality example: its Maturity 1 Year Fixed Rate Cash ISA currently shows 4.55% tax-free/AER fixed with a £500 minimum and no withdrawals. Its current maturity product information says eligible maturing customers can apply within the stated maturity window and can make additional eligible payments or transfers for five business days after opening.

Option 2: Transfer the Maturing Cash ISA to Another Provider

A formal ISA transfer is usually the correct route when you want to keep the existing ISA shelter but move to another bank or building society.

15 working days GOV.UK target maximum for transfers between Cash ISAs.
£20,000 Overall ISA subscription allowance for 2026/27.
Existing ISA money A formal transfer preserves the ISA wrapper rather than treating all transferred savings as a new bank deposit.
Interest earned inside the maturing ISA does not itself become a fresh ISA subscription. Nationwide and Coventry both explicitly state in their maturity guidance that existing ISA interest does not simply consume new annual allowance.
Check transfer-out timing. If your ISA has already been automatically reinvested into a new fixed product, provider-specific cooling-off or penalty-free maturity periods can become important. Start the external transfer promptly if you want to leave.

Option 3: Withdraw the Matured Cash ISA Into Your Bank Account

You can normally withdraw matured Cash ISA money if you need it. The important consequence is that an ordinary withdrawal takes the money outside the ISA wrapper.

Withdrawal may make sense when

  • You need the cash for an actual purchase or expense.
  • You no longer want to keep the full balance in tax-sheltered savings.
  • You have checked the allowance consequences.
  • You understand whether the maturity account is flexible.

Do not withdraw merely because

  • You want to move the ISA to another provider.
  • You found a higher Cash ISA rate elsewhere.
  • You think an external transfer requires the money to pass through your current account.
  • You assume you can automatically put all old ISA money back later.
Transfer and withdrawal solve different problems. If your objective is simply “same ISA money, different provider”, choose a formal ISA transfer rather than a normal withdrawal.

Can You Reinvest Part and Withdraw or Transfer the Rest?

Often yes, but the mechanics differ by building society. Nationwide, for example, currently says customers reinvesting at maturity can put all the money into the new ISA or withdraw some while reinvesting the rest.

Example: a £50,000 fixed Cash ISA matures. You decide that £10,000 should remain accessible and £40,000 can stay tax sheltered for longer. Depending on provider rules, you might move £40,000 into a new fixed ISA and place the remaining amount in an accessible ISA or withdraw it.
If part of the balance is being moved to a different provider, ask both providers how the partial transfer should be arranged before giving a withdrawal instruction. Do not improvise by withdrawing first.

What Happens if You Do Nothing When the Cash ISA Matures?

There is no universal answer. Your building society follows the default stated in the maturity terms.

Nationwide Current guidance says the ISA moves to an instant-access Fixed Term Cash ISA Maturity account.
Coventry Current maturity guidance says the ISA is automatically reinvested into the stated default ISA option, followed by a 21-day charge-free maturity window under its current process.
Skipton Current fixed ISA terms say the balance automatically transfers into a new one-year Fixed Rate Cash ISA unless you say otherwise.
West Brom Current terms can use a similar or shorter fixed Cash ISA, or a variable Cash ISA if the fixed option is unavailable.
Never assume “do nothing” means easy access. At some providers it can mean a fresh fixed term.

How Cash ISA Maturity Interacts With the 2026/27 ISA Allowance

The overall adult ISA subscription allowance for the 2026/27 tax year is £20,000. Existing ISA savings built up in earlier years can be much larger than this because the annual allowance applies to new subscriptions, not the entire accumulated ISA balance.

Old ISA balance You can hold more than £20,000 in ISAs where the money was accumulated under allowances from several tax years.
Formal ISA transfer Changing provider through the ISA transfer system does not mean your entire old ISA suddenly becomes a fresh £20,000 subscription.
New non-ISA money Fresh cash added at maturity counts towards the current tax year’s available ISA allowance.
Interest Interest already earned within an ISA does not itself use fresh subscription allowance.

Cash ISA Rules Change From 6 April 2027

The current 2026/27 tax year still has a £20,000 overall ISA subscription allowance. A significant Cash ISA change starts on 6 April 2027.

Under 65 Annual Cash ISA subscription limit becomes £12,000 from 6 April 2027.
Age 65+ Cash ISA subscription limit remains £20,000, subject to the overall ISA limit.
£20,000 Overall annual ISA limit remains £20,000.
Transfer rules New restrictions will apply to transfers from non-Cash ISAs into Cash ISAs for people under 65.
Do not apply the £12,000 limit to the current 2026/27 tax year. It starts on 6 April 2027. If your Cash ISA matures after that date, re-check the current HMRC rules before adding new money or arranging transfers involving a non-Cash ISA.

Is the Maturity ISA Flexible?

“Easy access” and “flexible ISA” are not the same thing. Easy access describes how easily you can withdraw money. ISA flexibility describes whether qualifying withdrawals can be replaced without automatically using fresh allowance.

Flexible ISA

  • Can allow qualifying withdrawals to be replaced.
  • Replacement normally needs to follow same-tax-year rules.
  • Provider-specific conditions still apply.
  • Useful if you temporarily need cash but expect to return it.

Non-flexible ISA

  • Withdrawing does not automatically restore used annual allowance.
  • Paying withdrawn cash back may count as a fresh subscription.
  • You can still use a formal ISA transfer to move provider.
  • The account can still be easy access despite being non-flexible.
If you plan to withdraw matured ISA money temporarily and put it back later, check the exact maturity account’s flexibility before making the withdrawal.

FSCS Protection When a Cash ISA Matures

Eligible Cash ISA deposits are covered by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme subject to its rules. The current standard limit is £120,000 per eligible person, per authorised firm.

Same building society Moving a matured ISA into another account with the same authorised firm does not create an additional separate £120,000 protection limit.
Different provider Check the receiving provider’s banking licence because separate brand names can sometimes share one authorisation.
ISA plus ordinary savings The protection limit applies across eligible deposits with the authorised firm, not separately to your ISA and taxable savings.
Large balance Temporary high-balance protection can apply in qualifying circumstances, but the separate FSCS rules must be checked.

Current Reinvestment Examples: Why Maturity Rates Need Comparing

Maturity offers can differ from public rates and are not always structured so that a longer term pays more. Treat these as dated examples rather than recommendations.

Principality maturity 1-year ISA Currently shown at 4.55% tax-free/AER fixed for eligible maturing customers, with a £500 minimum and no withdrawals.
Principality maturity 5-year ISA Currently shown at 4.35% tax-free/AER fixed. This illustrates why a longer fix does not automatically mean a higher current rate.
Nationwide public fixed ISA range Nationwide’s August 2026 update listed fixed Cash ISA rates from 4.40% for one year up to 4.70% for five years.
Coventry current fixed ISA examples Current public products include 4.00% fixed to December 2027 and 4.10% fixed to December 2028, each with early-closure charges.
Rate comparison rule: always compare the rate you can actually secure on the date of maturity. A rate printed in an earlier maturity letter can be replaced if the provider changes its available issues, unless that provider explicitly guarantees a rate under stated conditions.

Common Cash ISA Maturity Mistakes

Withdrawing to switch provider Use an ISA transfer instead if preserving the old ISA wrapper matters.
Assuming do-nothing means easy access Skipton and some other providers can automatically place matured ISA money into another fixed product.
Accepting the maturity rate without comparing Maturity products can be competitive, but they are not automatically the strongest rate or best term.
Re-fixing money needed soon A high fixed rate can be poor value if early access later triggers a large interest charge.
Confusing a transfer with new money Existing ISA transfers and fresh subscriptions are different parts of the ISA rules.
Assuming easy access means flexible Check the provider’s flexibility wording before withdrawing money you intend to replace.
Missing a cooling-off window Automatically reinvested maturity products can have a limited period when you can change course without the normal charge.
Ignoring FSCS totals An ISA and ordinary savings at the same authorised firm generally share the same standard protection limit.

Building Society Cash ISA Maturity FAQs

1. What happens when a fixed Cash ISA matures?

The fixed-interest period ends and the provider follows either the maturity instructions you supplied or its default process. Your savings can remain inside an ISA, be transferred to another ISA, be reinvested or be withdrawn.

2. Does a Cash ISA lose its tax-free status when it matures?

No. Maturity itself does not remove the ISA wrapper. The money can continue to be held tax-free if it remains within an ISA or is moved using the formal ISA transfer process.

3. Should I transfer or reinvest my maturing Cash ISA?

Reinvestment can suit you if the same provider offers a competitive rate, suitable term and acceptable access conditions. An ISA transfer can be more appropriate when another provider offers a better combination of rate, access, service or term. Compare both before giving instructions.

4. Can I withdraw my Cash ISA and then put it into another ISA?

You can withdraw matured money, but a normal withdrawal normally takes it outside the ISA wrapper. If your goal is to move the existing ISA savings to another provider while preserving their ISA status, use the receiving provider’s formal ISA transfer process instead.

5. Does transferring a matured Cash ISA use my £20,000 ISA allowance?

A formal transfer of existing ISA savings is different from paying fresh non-ISA money into an ISA. The 2026/27 overall ISA subscription allowance is £20,000, but accumulated existing ISA balances can be transferred under the ISA transfer rules without simply becoming new £20,000 subscriptions.

6. How long should a Cash ISA transfer take?

GOV.UK says transfers between Cash ISAs should take no longer than 15 working days. If a transfer takes longer, contact the provider handling the transfer and follow its complaints process if necessary.

7. What happens if I do nothing when my fixed Cash ISA matures?

It depends on the provider. Nationwide currently uses an instant-access maturity ISA, while Skipton’s current fixed Cash ISA terms provide for automatic transfer to another one-year Fixed Rate Cash ISA unless the customer gives different instructions. Always read the default stated in your own maturity notice.

8. Can I transfer only part of a matured Cash ISA?

Partial transfers can be possible depending on the money involved, provider terms and ISA rules. If you want part sent to a different provider and part retained or reinvested, ask the receiving and existing providers to confirm the correct ISA transfer process before making any withdrawal.

9. What changes to Cash ISAs from April 2027?

From 6 April 2027 the annual Cash ISA subscription limit will be £12,000 for people under 65, within the £20,000 overall ISA allowance. People aged 65 or over will retain a £20,000 Cash ISA limit. New restrictions will also affect certain transfers from non-Cash ISAs into Cash ISAs for people under 65.

10. Is a matured Cash ISA still protected by FSCS?

Eligible deposits remain subject to FSCS protection while held with an eligible UK-authorised deposit-taking firm. The current standard limit is £120,000 per eligible person, per authorised firm, across eligible deposits covered by that firm.
