Furness Building Society: Savings, Mortgages & Online Services

Furness Building Society combines something many savers still value—a real North West branch network—with a much stronger digital savings service than it offered a few years ago. Members can now manage eligible savings online or through the Furness Savings app while still using branches across Cumbria and Lancashire.

Mortgage customers have a different set of routes. Furness offers mainstream home-buying and remortgage options alongside more specialist lending for self-employed applicants, complex income, holiday lets, buy to let, later-life borrowing, self-build projects and Heartland borrowers in its North West communities.

Independent website and security notice: Building-society.org is not Furness Building Society. Meaningful editorial review: 16 September 2026. Savings rates, mortgage products, branch hours and digital-service procedures can change. Re-check the current Furness page before transferring money, opening an account, changing a mortgage or travelling to a branch.

What Furness Building Society Does

Furness Building Society is an independent mutual founded in 1865. Its main customer products are savings and mortgages, supported by branch, telephone and increasingly digital service.

Its traditional heartland is Cumbria and Lancashire, but its online savings reach is wider and several mortgage products are available beyond the immediate branch area. The Society has also continued to invest in both its branch estate and digital savings platform rather than choosing one service model over the other.

Mutual society Members rather than external shareholders sit at the centre of the ownership model.
Digital savings Eligible savers can manage balances, withdrawals, new accounts, maturity instructions and secure messages digitally.
Eight high-street branches The current network serves communities from Barrow and Millom to Lancaster, Preston and Poulton-le-Fylde.
Flexible mortgage underwriting Furness places particular emphasis on manual assessment and applicants whose circumstances may not fit a simple automated model.
